Project Statement
In Nashville’s creative Berry Hill district, Powell has reimagined what a design studio can be. Known for their seamless integration of architecture, interior design, and construction, Powell has completed a bold new headquarters that serves as both a statement of identity and a working prototype of their capabilities.
This self-developed project—designed, built, and inhabited by Powell—transforms two ordinary parcels into a striking three-story structure shared with STAT Wellness, a luxury medical and movement studio. The building merges high design with hands-on execution, showcasing Powell’s ability to carry a project from acquisition through construction, all under one roof.
For design media, this project offers more than just visual appeal. It’s a case study in creative control, local craft, and brand expression through built form. From custom tilework and handmade plaster walls to strategic use of glass, arches, and dynamic brickwork, every element was chosen and executed by Powell’s in-house team and their trusted fabricators. The result is a hospitality-driven workspace that doubles as a living gallery of regional makers—and a rare example of a firm designing and building its own studio from the ground up.
This is Powell’s most personal project to date—and their most ambitious. It’s a modern landmark that captures the firm’s evolving ethos: clear communication, material integrity, and beautiful, buildable ideas.
Framework for Design Excellence Narrative
### **INTEGRATION**
**Powell’s new headquarters isn’t just a workspace—it’s a built expression of the firm’s core values and creative vision. Every material, detail, and gesture reflects their belief that great design should feel effortless, be deeply rooted in craft, and serve a greater purpose: to bring people together. By blurring the lines between studio, hospitality space, and wellness destination, Powell has created a blueprint for how design-build firms can shape not just environments, but culture.**
### **WATER**
Sited on a constrained urban lot, the project prioritizes environmental stewardship. Native plantings and pervious pavers manage stormwater naturally, mitigating runoff and helping recharge the local water table while enhancing the ecological footprint of the site.
### **RESOURCES**
Materials were intentionally sourced from local craftspeople and makers, creating custom elements unique to the project and showcasing the region’s creative talent. Serving as a “living materials library,” the headquarters reflects Powell’s deep commitment to craft and collaboration.
### **EQUITABLE COMMUNITIES**
The design strengthens neighborhood connectivity by integrating two back-to-back lots, linking streets, a community park, and a key pedestrian corridor. A thoughtfully planted streetscape extends the urban fabric, encouraging street-level activity and fostering an authentic relationship with the surrounding community.
### **WELL-BEING**
Health and wellness drive the design. Both tenant spaces feature a variety of flexible work environments, supported by two expansive outdoor terraces that connect occupants to nature and neighborhood life. Open, inviting stairs encourage movement and accessibility, while the third-floor tenant’s mission actively promotes physical and mental well-being.
### **DISCOVERY**
Designing one’s own workplace offered Powell the rare opportunity to experiment, iterate, and evolve. Acting as designer, builder, and user, the team shaped an adaptable environment where open work areas can be rearranged as needs change. Throughout the space, local artistry comes to life—from custom “P-word” tiles to bold patterns and colors—turning daily movement through the office into an immersive, ever-changing experience of discovery.
