Project Statement
Located in the heart of an expansive mixed-use development, Nashville Soccer Club’s year-round training facility sets a new standard for comprehensive player development and operational synergy. The state-of-the-art facility integrates training, recovery, and performance spaces alongside media, coaching, and administrative operations. An attached orthopedic clinic offers convenient medical care serving both players and the general public. The clinic and club operations are expressed through a distinct design language reflective of their public and private programming. Although functionally independent, the two parts are designed to come together as a cohesive architectural expression.
Materiality reinforces the distinction between the facility’s public and private functions. Corrugated metal panels define the clinic exterior, while stone gives the training facility a more grounded presence. An expansive metal-clad canopy extends from the training facility over the clinic, unifying the two volumes.
The facility takes advantage of the site’s natural slope as part of its stormwater strategy. Berms along all four sides direct runoff from three pervious soccer pitches—two natural grass and one turf—into designated detention areas.
Player locker rooms, hydrotherapy, recovery rooms, and a double-height weight room are arranged in a linear sequence to easily guide players through their daily training routines with minimal disruption. A moveable glass wall system spans the entire length of training spaces to connect players physically and visually to the adjacent pitches.
The facility also includes a players-only lounge and dining commons to support time together off the field. Quieter respite areas and outdoor terraces overlooking the pitches offer players space to recharge between training sessions. Together, these spaces respond to the full rhythm of a player’s day, making it a home away from home throughout the season.
Framework for Design Excellence Narrative
Design for Integration The Nashville SC Training Facility demonstrates how an unlikely project type, professional sports training facilities, can be integrated into mixed-use developments. The on-site orthopedic clinic extends the project’s impact beyond its primary function, providing care for both players and the general public while strengthening connections to the surrounding community. The facility also serves as a flexible resource for the broader soccer community, accommodating local soccer camps and welcoming visiting international teams when they are in Nashville. The facility establishes a carefully balanced relationship between public and private functions, creating a welcoming presence that remains connected to neighboring establishments and contributes meaningfully to the character, vitality, and accessibility of the broader site.
Design for Water The facility's three practice pitches are strategically placed to take advantage of the site's existing topography. Initially perceived as a design hurdle to overcome, the slope was leveraged to provide optimal drainage for the practice areas, allowing stormwater to flow naturally into nearby swales. This approach to water management was integrated from the project's early planning stages. Careful siting of each program element eliminated the need for intensive site re-grading and drainage infrastructures.
Design for Well-being Designed for both recovery and performance, Nashville Soccer Club's Training Facility prioritizes holistic player and staff well-being through its comprehensive program offerings and harmonious interior ambiance. The facility exudes a bright, hospitality-like interior with a natural material and color palette—a stark contrast to the SC's home game environment, characterized by heavy steel and electric gold and blue. Branding moments are subdued and intentional, contributing to a calm and focused training and workplace environment.
