The Vista at Origin Park

The Vista at Origin Park is a deeply sustainable, single-story civic venue set within a new 430-acre public waterfront park along the Ohio River in Clarksville, Indiana. Conceived as two overlapping leaves, the building is organized by continuous stone walls that flow through the structure like a stream, guiding visitors toward panoramic river views. Solar energy and natural, renewable materials reduce the project’s carbon footprint while creating a warm, welcoming place for community gathering.


Project Statement

Origin Park transforms a neglected 430-acre Ohio River waterfront—historically impacted by unpermitted industrial landfills, quarries, and unregulated dumping—into a vibrant public asset. Positioned within the restored uplands of a landscape subject to extreme flooding, The Vista at Origin Park serves as the park’s civic gateway and “social heart.”

Organized around a central stone spine that evokes a flowing waterway, the architecture creates an intuitive procession through two overlapping forms toward the riverfront. The 14,000-square-foot facility supports a highly flexible indoor-outdoor event program and serves as an adaptable hub for regional civic life and public gathering. The light-filled Main Hall frames expansive river views and can be divided into two independent event spaces to accommodate civic, corporate, and private functions. An outdoor terrace extends gatherings into the landscape, while private lounges, a Green Room, and catering support spaces provide the infrastructure required for events of varying scales. The venue accommodates up to 360 guests for seated dining and 429 for reception-style gatherings, with event revenue supporting River Heritage Conservancy’s continued stewardship of Origin Park.

Regional and renewable materials reinforce the building’s connection to place. An expressive glue-laminated timber structure is enclosed by a high-performance rainscreen facade of torrefied poplar, split-face Indiana limestone, expansive glazing, and bronze ACM panels.

Environmental performance is integrated directly into the architecture. The sweeping standing-seam metal roof incorporates a minimum R-50 assembly and a 60.72 kW photovoltaic array projected to generate up to 81,800 kWh of renewable energy annually. An on-site geothermal field of 28 closed-loop wells, each drilled 500 feet deep, supports water-source heat pumps for efficient climate control. High-performance storefront glazing, operable windows, clerestories, and skylights maximize daylight, views, and opportunities for natural ventilation, maintaining a continuous connection between occupants, the restored landscape, and the Ohio River.

Framework for Design Excellence Narrative

- Design for Integration: The Vista serves as both a physical and civic gateway, integrating low-carbon architecture, public gathering, and regional environmental stewardship. Its plan creates a seamless flow between flexible interior spaces—anchored by a divisible Main Hall—and the adjoining outdoor event terrace, while expansive glazing and continuous connections to the surrounding landscape blur the boundary between inside and out. Administrative offices are integrated alongside public event spaces, linking the facility’s daily operations with community programming and reinforcing the building’s role as an educational, outreach, and gathering hub within Origin Park. The plans clearly show offices, flexible event spaces, an operable partition, lobby, and exterior terrace relationships.
- Design for Ecosystems: The Vista’s compact footprint is concentrated within the park’s uplands, allowing development and active programming to occur on previously disturbed land while protecting the more ecologically sensitive floodplain and lowland habitats. The building is embedded within a restored landscape of native meadow, woodland, and garden plantings that stabilize disturbed soils, expand habitat, and support the park’s broader biodiversity goals. Native plantings extend to the building perimeter and connect the venue to surrounding restoration meadows and woodlands, allowing the architecture to become part of a larger ecological system rather than an isolated object within the park. The site material specifically identifies a Meadow Garden with native plantings and restoration meadows and woodlands dedicated to native habitat restoration.
- Design for Water: Stormwater management is integrated into the architecture and landscape as a visible expression of the site’s relationship with water. Rainwater from the curved standing-seam metal roof is collected through concealed gutters and downspouts, while exposed pre-weathered Corten steel gutters and rain chains celebrate the movement of water at key locations. These elements visibly manage roof drainage while reinforcing the project’s broader strategy of working with the hydrologic character of the Ohio River site rather than separating the building from it. This approach complements Origin Park’s larger water-resilience strategy, which organizes development around a landscape subject to annual flooding exceeding 50 feet. The Corten gutters, rain chains, hidden gutters, and downspouts are specifically documented in the roof plan.
- Design for Energy: The Vista integrates passive and active strategies to significantly reduce operational energy demand. A minimum R-50 roof assembly, insulated low-e glazing, operable storefront windows, and operable skylights improve envelope performance while providing abundant daylight and opportunities for natural ventilation. High-efficiency systems complement these measures through a ground-source geothermal well field serving water-source heat pumps and a dedicated outdoor-air unit with energy recovery. A rooftop photovoltaic array provides on-site renewable energy generation, while energy-efficient LED lighting is designed at an average lighting power density of 0.8 watts per square foot. The R-50 roof, geothermal system, energy-recovery system, LED criterion, and PV array are all supported by the CDs.
- Design for Resources: The Vista prioritizes renewable, durable, and regionally expressive materials to reduce the environmental impact of construction. Glue-laminated timber serves as a primary structural material and, together with exposed wood roof decking, establishes much of the building’s architectural character. The exterior envelope combines wood rainscreen cladding with split-face Indiana limestone, extending a natural material palette from the surrounding landscape into the building. Structure, enclosure, and finish are intentionally expressed as integral components of the architecture, reinforcing material authenticity and reducing reliance on unnecessary decorative layers. The CDs clearly document glue-laminated wood, wood decking, wood siding, and limestone veneer.
- Design for Well-being: Occupant health, daylight, views, and connection to nature are central to The Vista’s interior experience. Clerestories, operable skylights, and expansive glazed walls bring natural light deep into the Main Hall and public spaces while framing views of the surrounding restored landscape. Exposed glue-laminated timber, wood decking, and limestone create a warm, tactile interior palette, while direct connections to adjacent outdoor gathering areas extend the experience into the landscape. Together, these strategies reinforce a strong biophilic relationship between occupants, architecture, and Origin Park’s natural setting. The drawings and presentation material support the glazing, skylights, river views, exposed structure, and indoor-outdoor connection.
